| ◊Personality◊ Perhaps because of his species' longevity, perhaps because of their natural affinity with the planet and its geological measures of time, Nanaki's inclination is to let the world go at its own pace, rather than rush it. His life with humans, however, has taught him the necessity of proaction and decisiveness, and his time as the Guardian of Cosmo Canyon in the turmoil post-Meteor has awakened a willingness in him to lead. It also taught him political canny-- although largely that's a question of being able to out-think everyone he's ever met --and that sometimes he has to throw his weight around. He is still young, however, and can be excitable. • His background is very tribal, and that he is used to a strong sense of community, where members care for each other as family, related or not. As a result, and because of his role as a leader in such a community, he generally concerns himself with and feels responsible for others' well-being, friend of foe. Anyone he takes into his "brood" is [afforded] his protection, and an insult to one is an insult to all. In a fight between friends, he's prone to playing devil's advocate. • Red is an academic, and is inclined to study anything he finds interesting with scientific thoroughness. • Having been mistreated terribly by humans in his early life, Red carries an ingrained dislike for the species. Over time, as he has come to know and love many individuals, the feeling has morphed into a sort of pitying condescension, though you would never know it from his behavior. • Red is NOT human. His instincts and inclinations differ from humanity's. Raw meat does not bother him. Bunnies are not so much cute as edible-looking. Certain human ideas, while he understands the psychology behind them and behaves accordingly, he simply does not share. The need for clothing, for one. The idea that sleeping together is an intimate behavior, for another. Especially that last one, as no one seems to mind sleeping curled up with him. • As an odd contrast/compliment to his comprehensive understanding of the natural sciences, Red's spiritual beliefs are strong, and rooted in what most would call mysticism. Generally speaking, Nanaki comes off as wise and placid. |

| ◊Strengths◊ Red is very, very smart, and will, very occasionally, reason an answer out from very little information. He is also very well educated. His ears pick up sounds better than most humans', and his nose is strong enough that he can follow a scent. Claws and teeth mean that he is always armed, and his body is well designed for stealth and speed. He is passably skilled with magic. His devotion to the planet's cause is absolute. He makes a very good listener-- and the ability to pass himself off as an animal, while not his favorite past-time, means that he can listen in to conversations people wouldn't have if they knew he could understand. He fights with ...hairpins? (If anyone has any theories about how that works, I'd be willing to hear them ^^;) ◊Weaknesses◊ Growing up the smartest in a very academic society has left him, in polite terms, somewhat more than self assured about his intelligence. Add to this the fact that he is still young, and his opinion of humans as slightly inferior, and all the trained objectivity in the world could not break him of casually dismissing another's ideas if he finds them invalid. (It doesn't help that he's usually right, because when he's wrong, it can lead to serious trouble.) • Having only one good eye slightly cripples Red's depth perception/sensation and vision field. His right side is his blind side. He does not have fingers, which causes him innumerable problems with everything from opening doors to using a phone. • He is privately obsessed with the thought of finding more of his kind. A lead on that front would go far to distracting him. • The habit of considering every possible angle of a situation can easily lock Red up over a decision, or make him hesitate at a crucial moment. | |||
| ◊History◊ Nanaki was born in Cosmo Canyon to Mitena and Seto of the Agoyoanye tribe-- the tribe of the falling star. His is the last known birth in the last known tribe of his kind, and he came into the world during a dangerous time: Cosmo Canyon faced the beginnings of war with the violent Gi tribe. As the Canyon's Guardians, Nanaki's tribe fought themselves to the very brink of extinction against the Gi. When he was 7 years old, Nanaki was one of four of his kind left in the world: himself, his mother and father, and another young pup, Deneh. The Gi, sensing victory, invested all their forces into a final sneak attack upon Cosmo Canyon, but were stopped by Seto. While his heroic efforts won the war, Seto himself was petrified by the Gi's poison arrows, and never returned to his family. Nanaki grew up believing that his father was a cowardly deserter because Bugenhagen somehow neglected to tell him the truth, wtf. Only three years later, heart sick and never fully recovered from a wound received during the war, his mother passed away. Nanaki fell into Bugenhagen's care. Bugenhagen raised Nanaki in the ways of his tribe as best he could: overseeing his intense education in the ways of the planet and all its living things himself, supplemented with lessons from nearly everyone of the villagers to teach him the ways of Cosmo Canyon specifically, and by their hunters and warriors how survive and how to fight. Nanaki learned his lessons well. Love for the planet and it's life became an inherent part of his being. But he was not so fond of all its inhabitants-- because while he spent many years among humans, and did indeed care for them, the memory of how the Gi tribe had wiped out his race remained always at the back of his mind, making him bitter toward the thriving joy of those around him. It did not help that Deneh, the only other of his kind, felt the same. For thirty years, Nanaki lived in stifling peace within Cosmo Canyon-- until the day the Turks arrived with orders to capture one of his kind. Nanaki fought the suits, allowing Deneh to perform a ritual to appease the planet (in which she is apparently placed into an alter for a number of years...?) He lost the fight, in the end, and the Turks took him to ShinRa, where he spent a little under 7 years as a specimen in the Science Department. There he was given the label Red XIII. His preexisting bitterness toward humanity became all out hatred. Then he was freed by AVALANCHE. Meeting these good, colorful, people, and learning that they fought for the planet, made him think of Cosmo Canyon and the good people there. He remembered his beloved Grandfather, and decided to give the race a second chance. During that time, traveling the world and meeting all walks, he began to accept humans, good, bad, and other, as another part of the planet. Coming to love the members of AVALANCHE, and eventually learning the truth of his father's disappearance and death-- that he had sacrificed himself for the safety of the good people of Cosmo Canyon --drove the point home. After Meteor, Nanaki devoted himself to his duty as Guardian of Cosmo Canyon, and, by extension, Guardian of the planet's life. Between offering his knowledge and strength to fight the shinentai and Deepground, he became the keeper of Gaia's sciences and lore. Under his care Cosmo Canyon is once again the center of the educational world. Privately, he has spent the years looking for more of his kind. It seems, however, that his search will have to be put on hold. | |||
